You can't trust a man who's dressed as Mae West, especially not in Mae West's house. One of Hollywood's earliest sex symbols, the whip-smart blonde's star has fallen since the Hays Code cracked down on the racy repartee that made her famous. Her latest project is a thinly veiled autobiographical novel, whose only copy is stolen just after she finishes her first draft.
Tonight she's having a Mae West party, with every guest a man dressed as her. The thief is among those in drag, and P.I. Toby Peters has come to tear off his wig. He's there as a favor to his brother, a brutal cop who had a fling with West when she first moved to Hollywood. But this is more than a theft. The crook wants to destroy Mae West, and he has murder on his mind.

Since Stuart Kaminsky's death Toby Peters and company are no more. So I decided to reread the Toby mysteries and find them to be as entertaining as ever. A private detective in 1940's Los Angeles, Toby finds himself working for a different Hollywood personality in each book. This time it's Mae West, and it's as good as they get. Kaminsky was a movie historian and really knew how to work the stars into a mystery story. The real star, of course, is Toby, and I'll miss him down the road, but I won't hesitate to bring him back on my Kindle every couple of years or so. Next on the list is Gable, then Astaire and John Wayne. You can't go wrong with this cast of characters.Product details

He Done Her Wrong Toby Peters Book 8 (Audible Audio Edition) Stuart Kaminsky Stephen Bowlby a division of Recorded Books HighBridge Books Reviews
Another formulaic success starring a celebrity appearance by Mae West.
The plot involving the sanitorium could have come straight out of a Shadow radio episode -- except funnier, of course. I kept expecting a Blue Coal commercial any moment.
fun facts
The title comes from "She Done Him Wrong" -- a 1933 pre-Hays-Code film starring Mae West (her real name) and a variation of the lyric from the song, Frankie and Johnny (a ballad based on the true story of Frankie Baker and her victim, Allen Britt).
Kaminsky was recommended by a person whose opinion I respect, but I didn't especially like the book. Perhaps I will read another, but probably not.
Kitty Girl
Not as good as most of the others. The trap in the insane institute was a bit of a stretch. I mean, even for the 40s--no paperwork. Come on.
I've read a number of the Toby Peters mysteries and enjoyed them for the setting and fun they have with famous names of the screen of that time. This one focuses on Mae West but the plot is not very involving and the pacing rather slow. There are some tedious moments as Peters reads the latest unpublished writings of his landlady and a rather silly escape from a mental institution. Too many signs of padding with this story.
I have been a Toby Peters fan for years. This is not high literature but pure escapism. Being of the WW iI generation I am sure there is a good bit of notalgia tied in with my enjoyment of this series. I hope that Mr. Kaminsky will bring Peters out of retirement.
One of my favorites - move fans will love this series
He Done Her Wrong is a sentimental send-up of hard boiled detectives and 1940's Hollywood. Stuart Kaminsky knows how to make his ensemble cast move through their paces at the usual high octane rate. It's 1942 and things aren't going well for the Allies but even worse for private detective. Toby Peters. You would think otherwise when his celebrity client is Mae West. But from there it's all downhill. The set piece is Toby in the insane asylum. You gotta read this to believe it. If you can find it in your local library, check it out. Better yet buy it on and have a wild and crazy ride.
